The following games and activities are a great way to start a workshop or session. They get young people moving, talking, thinking and focused and can be tailored to any theme, issue or area of work you are planning to cover.


Aim: To get young people to begin to engage with the language of mental health


This game is a word race between two teams. Each team member has to write a word down, pass the pen to the next person who then also writes a word, until everyone has written something and the pen has travelled down the whole line.


    1. Grab a roll of plain wallpaper or paper table cloth and stretch it out the length of the room you are in
    2. Split the group into 2 and ask them to line up on either side of the paper
    3. Give a marker pen to each team member standing at the front of the line
    4. For the first race, start with a simple task, ask each team member to write down their first name on the paper and then pass the pen down the line
    5. After everyone is clear on how the game works, introduce a category, like ‘animals’. Clarify that each team can only write down an animal once. They will have to work together to make sure that no words are repeated
    6. For the last round, ask the team to write down words that describe emotions. Again clarify that each team can only write down a particular word once. They will have to work together to make sure that no words are repeated
    7. After this final round use the words written as a starting point to introduce openness and conversation around the subject and its connection to health and wellbeing in a gentle way



Aim: To gain an understanding of the group dynamics and to encourage young people to share basic feelings and emotions.


Just like a game of traditional bingo but with pictures and statements instead of numbers. The pictures show a variety of everyday activities and associated emotions, where the young people become the bingo balls.


      1. Use 1 Bingo sheet per game
      2. On the sheets are pictures and statements such as ‘someone who travelled on the bus’, ‘someone who can sing a song in a different language’ or ‘someone who cries at a sad film’, or ‘someone who has been angry this week’
      3. Give a copy of the bingo sheet to each group member. tell them they have 3 minutes to find a different group member for each square. Encourage them to stand up and mingle with each other in order to fill in there bingo sheet. Once someone has filled their bingo sheet they shout BINGO
      4. Check that all the answers are correct with the other group members. This may involve asking people to prove they can do whatever was on their sheet.
      5. Repeat the activity with another Bingo sheet
